SAP S/4HANA is the fourth version of the SAP ERP Business Suite (Enterprise Resource Planning). This new SAP S/4 release only runs on SAP HANA database.
The HANA database allows the user community within your organization to get real-time access to data for daily operational processes like planning and (for example) manufacturing and sales but also get real-time access to data for prediction and simulation purposes.
The straight answer is because your current SAP ECC support will run out by SAP AG by the end of 2027. However, to zoom in deeper it will give your own company also the opportunity to get ready for the future, to get ready for further digitalization. In other words, critical review of your own business processes, data platform, effectiveness level of your own organization and IT landscape and check whether this is all future-proof and harmonized pays-off and now is the right moment!
Basically you now have one operation ERP platform supported by one data source, larger data in one system saves you hardware costs. It also simplifies your IT landscape and this reduces cost of ownership. SAP S/4 HANA is more user friendly in providing specific integrated apps for user interaction (Fiori). SAP S/4 provides better standards for integrating non-SAP applications with SAP platform.
Also the deployment flexibility in running SAP on the cloud, on premise or hybrid solution adds business and IT benefits.
Unfortunately there is no single correct answer to this question, however from a technical perspective the migration can be done in 8-12 months.
There is always a but, you need to realize that the success criteria for SAP S/4 implementations depends on how well your organization has been prepared for this migration. How mature are your business processes, how standardized and harmonized are your ways of working, your data structures used and how adoptable to change is your organization? How does your current IT landscape looks like, etc. etc..
More important is to understand what are the key success factors, dependencies, risks and how to manage these in an integrated way.
